What is AI Engine Optimization?
AI Engine Optimization (AEO) is the process of structuring a business website so AI assistants cite the business by name when users ask for recommendations. It is the AI equivalent of traditional SEO. Where SEO targets Google's blue-link search results, AEO targets the AI answer that increasingly appears above those results, or that replaces them entirely on platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Siri, and Alexa.
AEO works because AI assistants do not browse the web the way humans do. They parse structured data, semantic HTML, llms.txt files, and authoritative off-site signals to decide which businesses to mention. A website that is invisible to that machinery does not get cited, regardless of how well it ranks on traditional Google. AEO is the process of making sure the machinery sees you.
Why this matters now
Over 100 million people use ChatGPT weekly, and Google has rolled out AI Overviews on most US English search results. When someone searches "best web designer for plumbers" or "auto body shop near me," Google increasingly shows an AI-generated answer above the traditional listings. If that AI answer recommends competitors by name and skips your business, the customer has their answer before they ever see a blue link. AEO is how a business gets cited inside that answer.
AI search authority compounds. The businesses establishing AI presence first are the ones AI engines learn to associate with their category. This is similar to how early SEO investors in the 2010s built ranking authority that competitors could not displace for years. The window is open right now and it is narrowing as more businesses move in.

How the AEO process works
Audit and discovery (Week 1)
The current site is audited for structured data, semantic HTML, content gaps, and off-site signal consistency. AI engines are tested with the business's category to see what they currently recommend.
On-site optimization (Week 1 to 2)
llms.txt is authored. JSON-LD schemas are added across every page. AI-optimized FAQs are written. The sitemap and robots.txt are tuned. Page content is rewritten for AI quotability where needed.
Off-site signal alignment (Week 2)
Google Business Profile is audited and tuned. NAP (name, address, phone) consistency is verified across Yelp, BBB, and industry directories. Inconsistencies are corrected.
Indexing window (Weeks 2 to 12)
AI engines re-crawl the site and update their indexes. First citations typically appear in 4 to 12 weeks depending on category competitiveness. Progress is tracked monthly.
Ongoing optimization
Content is refreshed monthly based on what AI engines are citing. llms.txt is updated quarterly. New questions and content gaps are identified and filled.
What results to expect
AEO is not instant. AI engines re-index slowly and authority signals take weeks to accumulate. Most clients see first citations in 4 to 12 weeks. In less competitive local categories (specialty trades, regional service areas) citations come faster. In saturated categories (general contractors, big-city restaurants) it takes longer because there is more existing authority to displace.
Reasonable expectations: within 90 days, the business is being cited by at least one major AI engine in at least one relevant prompt. Within 6 months, the business is appearing across multiple engines and multiple prompts. Beyond that, the trajectory compounds as more pages, more reviews, and more directory signals reinforce each other.
